Tips for Buying a Pool

A Simple Process

Deciding to install a pool at your home is an exciting decision! However, choosing the builder who will ultimately install your pool is not a decision you should go into lightly. Before you choose your pool builder, you should ask them a series of questions to make sure that their expertise and skill meet your standards. Below we will give you questions to ask your potential pool builder to make sure you go into construction with confidence.

Pools are a relatively simple product to produce, and the market is very competitive. This has led many pool companies to suggest that others are not doing a good job. Some of the sales pitches are:

“They don’t use enough or large enough gauge rebar”

“They don’t have 12” bond beams”

           “They re-use gunite overspray”

           “They don’t have enough experience”

The reality is that all pool construction companies are subject to regulation. The pools are engineered, permitted, and inspected by local building officials for code compliance. The major difference between pool construction companies lies in two areas:

  • The first is that they can be deceptive in price. Much like purchasing a new home, you walk into the model home and love the finished product and then find out that the price you were quoted does not include the extras or the premium upscale appliances, carpets, tile and marble. This applies to swimming pools as well.
  • The second has to do with timing and how quickly they will actually start on your project. A pool is not an overnight or even a month-long project.  We give you an honest and realistic time frame when we quote your project, and we don’t tell you just what you want to hear.

These are the key issues we suggest you consider when purchasing your pool. Whether you hire us or a competitor, there are things that you need to know.  Choosing your pool contractor will not be out of fear when you are informed.  The reality is all established pool construction companies have a great product.

HELPFUL HINTS

Make sure you compare apples to apples when looking at other pool company quotes!

We have already included many upgrades in our estimate such as mini pebble finish, variable speed pumps and LED color lights.  These are expensive upgrades that are included with all our pools.  We want you to be happy with the finished project and we believe many of these upgrades are an important part of your satisfaction in the end.

The process of obtaining bids and selecting a pool company can be overwhelming to say the least. Consider these tips to separate the legitimate contractors from the rest.

GETTING QUOTES:

  • Quotes should be complete and include:
    • total price
    • estimated starting and completion dates
    • details of everything that will be supplied
    • detailed drawing (rendering)
    • contractor’s license number

  • Make sure to ask about all possible extra costs

GREAT QUESTIONS:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Do you require a deposit?
  • How long will it take to get a quote?
  • When will you apply for the permits?
  • How long before construction will start after permits are issued?
  • How long will the pool take to build?
  • Can I be charged extra for anything?
  • Who do I call if I have any questions?
